Director of Health Initiatives Barbara Walls, with her years of experience as a registered nurse and educator, performs health outreach on behalf of the Lung Association. One of several crucial programs she delivers is Why You Don’t Want To Become A Drug Addict By Smoking Cigarettes, a presentation to grade 5 students on the dangers of cigarettes. Teachers throughout the province have seen the results first hand!
“Barbara uses a hands on, visual-kinesthetic approach to sharing her knowledge. Children are engaged and on the edge of their seats for the entirety of her teaching. I have had countless students exclaim ‘I will never, ever smoke’” after listening to Barb complete her presentation. She discusses the short and long term effects of smoking as well as how to address peer-pressure in their upcoming years. As a teacher, it is a joy to see students pledge to never touch cigarettes. I look forward to having Barb return to my classroom for years to come!”
- Katie Dow, Blacks Harbour School
“I`ve never seen kids so focused in all of my teaching years! The presentation was hands-on and very visual. The students loved it so much that they shared the information they learn to their parents and grandparents. It`s encouraging to know that the message has been shared outside school. I can`t wait to have her again this year. She has true passion for this important awareness.”
- Sophie Caissie, Priestman Street School
“Barbara captivated their interest and engaged them with hands-on activities to help them learn about the impacts of smoking. This presentation connects with anatomy and health lessons. Students were impacted and many vowed to never smoke after this presentation on awareness.”
- Amy Conn, Park Street School
