The stress for New Brunswickers travelling to Montreal for lung transplants has been dramatically reduced.
There are lung transplant centers in five (5) Canadian cities: Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver. Lung transplant candidates on a wait-list must live within a 2 1/2 hour drive from the transplant center. New Brunswick lung transplant patients move temporarily to either Toronto or Montreal for the duration of their waiting period, surgery and recovery.
Until April 2017, New Brunswickers who went to Montreal for their transplants could not simply order their medications from a pharmacy in their adopted city. Instead, patients were required to order their medications from New Brunswick pharmacies and have them couriered to Montreal, including critical anti-rejection medications that need to be taken on a strict schedule. A late shipment could have been a matter of life and death.
The New Brunswick Lung Association, in cooperation with Medavie Blue Cross, has facilitated an arrangement with Montreal pharmacy Proxim to provide these New Brunswick patients with their medications at their Rene Levesque E. Location.
