Citizen Science Opportunity

The New Brunswick Lung Association is distributing 15-20 PurpleAir PM2.5 monitors across the province and we are looking for people, businesses or organizations who are willing to install the monitor on the exterior of their building or home. We are casting a wide net, but only have a limited number of monitors, so if we get a lot of interest, we will be choosing based on location and timing.

We would like to install a PurpleAir PM2.5 monitor on the exterior of your facility or home to gather data on the level of PM2.5 in your region. Our goal is to increase the public’s understanding of the health risks of PM2.5, possible exposure sources, and the protective actions they can take to reduce exposure.

The installation of the monitor is fairly simple, requiring only an electrical outlet and a wi-fi signal. The data from the monitors will be able to be viewed by the public on the Purple Monitor website. After installation there will be little need for you to tend to the monitor. We also hope to engage your local community through social media about the data the monitor is capturing.

Specific regions we are hoping to have a monitor include:

  • Sussex region
  • Edmundston area
  • Miramichi region
  • Central NB (Doaktown/Blackville area)
  • Near the Maine/NB border
  • Saint John/Grand Bay/Quispamsis

Please contact Alyse Wilton at NB Lung for more information or to request a monitor: alyse.wilton@nb.lung.ca
