NEW BRUNSWICK LUNG ASSOCIATION RECEIVES GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM ASHRAE FOR YOUTH ASTHMA EDUCATION
(FREDERICTON) The New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (NB/PEI ASHRAE), has made a contribution towards asthma education for youth in the province, through a $4,000 donation to the New Brunswick Lung Association’s annual Camp AsthmaTOPIA. Camp AsthmaTOPIA is a week-long summer camp where children with asthma aged 8 to 11 can have a safe camp experience while learning skills that help them to better control their asthma symptoms. The camp provides fun and interactive asthma education sessions along with the opportunity to participate in the usual fun and games of a summer camp. "During their week at camp, the children gain independence and improve their self-confidence. They learn that they can do all the same activities as their friends without asthma when their asthma is well-controlled" said Kenneth Maybee, President and CEO of the New Brunswick Lung Association. "On behalf of the AsthmaTOPIA campers who will have an opportunity to attend summer camp, I extend a most sincere thank you to ASHRAE. You are helping to make a difference to the one in five New Brunswickers who suffer from respiratory illness." Frédéric Desjardins, President of the NB/PEI ASHRAE chapter for 2006-2007: “Our chapter has chosen the NB Lung Association due the overlapping mandates of both organizations. Our chapter geographical area is large and we needed to find an aid organization that would benefits the totality of the geographical area while being related to the ideals of ASHRAE. The New Brunswick and the PEI Lung Associations were a perfect fit.” ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education. The Lung Association, in its efforts to promote and define a healthy indoor environment, reference ASHRAE written standards and guidelines which are recognized internationally and are referenced in the National Building Codes of Canada, United States and other countries throughout the world. The ASHRAE standards and guidelines are developed via research performed by Universities and Research Laboratories throughout Canada, the United States and internationally. All of the research for ASHRAE standards and guidelines are funded by donations from members, companies and the general public at large in the form of research grants. The University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus, was one of the many Canadian institutions to benefit from these grants and helped advance the technologies of the industry and its directive principles.
