Risks of herbal medicine for the allergy patient

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) advises that some herbal remedies may pose a risk for those seasonal and other allergies.  Echinacea and chamomile are in the same plant family as ragweed, and may cause a significant allergic reaction in people with an allergy to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies.   Echinacea may also cause a reaction in those who have an allergy to sunflower seeds or melons. The AAAAI also advises that herbal medicines can contain moulds and other contaminants as well as aspirin and steroidal substances that are not always noted on the label.  Those with allergies and/or asthma should exercise caution when taking herbal supplements or remedies.  Full story
